Shipwrecks are lootable locations that are found in almost every biome. Looting yields 2-3 different items, including dynamite and rarely a treasure map. It costs 1 travel day to search a wreck before looting.

When an abomination companion is present, an event may be triggered in which another companion mysteriously disappears while searching the area.

Looting does not lower standing, but may spawn a nearby animal enemy that can aggro and chase the party.

Trivia

Many of the names of the ships are references to real or fictional ships. These include:

• HMS Beagle. The ship that carried Charles Darwin around the world.
• The Black Rock. The ship that is found deep in the jungle in the hit TV series Lost. The presence of dynamite in every shipwreck on the game may have been influenced by this particular ship, as well as the fact that the shipwrecks are often located on "impossible" places, too far from the coast.
• Whydah. Whydah Gally was the ship of the famous captain pirate Samuel "Black Sam" Bellamy.
• CSS Alabama. It was a confederate ship that captured, sank, or burned 68 ships during the American Civil War.
• Fancy. The ship that was commanded by the pirate Henry Every in the late 17th century.
• Adventure Galley. Also known as Adventure, it was commanded by the privateer William Kidd, who later turned into a pirate.
• Santa Maria. The flagship of Christopher Columbus. It was partially dismantled to obtain timbers for Fort Navidad, "Christmas Fort," placed in a native Taíno village. The fort was the first Spanish settlement in the New World.
• HMS Terror. A bomb vessel that was transformed for polar exploration. In 1845 it disappeared along HMS Erebus trying to find the Northwest Passage. The first season of the tv series The Terror tells the fictional story of what could have happened for its disappearance.
