Curious Expedition Wiki

Title

Curious Expedition RIVALS is a multiplayer addition to Curious Expedition added in version 1.4.

It features a World Map up to 10,000 times larger than in the original game with a single Golden Pyramid . Players race to discover new Regions and have their names and portraits remembered for all other players to see. Players can acquire prestigious badges with every golden pyramid you discover. Earn and equip your Trek with over 140 Expedition Crates to customize your playstyle and experiment with different strategies.

The World Map gets discovered for all players as Regions get uncovered. Once someone finds the Golden Pyramid a 24 hour countdown starts signaling the end of the world and the start of a fresh map.

Start a New Expedition[]

Character

Before you begin be sure to choose an Adventurer with the Random Adventurer portrait. If you find one you like you can save the portrait in one of your three Portrait Slots.

Your adventurer will change visually to match the portrait. The first portrait slot is free but the other two are locked until you purchase them with the Medals you can earn along the way.

Selecting an Outpost[]

Outpost

Before you can start playing you must choose a starting Outpost. Outposts show what type of Terrain is in the Region and are ranked in difficulty by the number of skulls that appear under them (1-3 Skulls).

Players should expect tougher enemies around Outposts with more than one Skull. It's recommended that players just starting out to choose a starting location with only 1 Skull. Now that you have selected an Outpost its time to prepare your Trek.

Selecting Equipment[]

Starter Crate

After choosing an Outpost it's time to choose what Expedition Crates you want to bring with you. You can equip up to 5 Expedition Crates for your Trek. There are over 140 Expedition Crates, However when you first start out you will only have the Starter Crate. But you will find that Expedition Crates are given to you quite liberally as you discover Locations. Most Expedition Crates are used up when you take them on an Expedition, with the exception of the Starter Crate and any Held Crate.

Earning Medals[]

Medals can be earned in a variety of ways...

  • 1 Medal for every 1/5/10 Regions discovered.
  • 1 Medal for every Outpost discovered.
  • 1 Medal for every Golden Pyramid discovered.
  • ??? Medal(s) for top leaderboard scores after the world ends.

Spending Medals[]

Medal

You can spend Medals on either extra Adventurer Portrait Slots or Holding Expedition Crates.

The second and third Portrait Slot cost 5 and 10 Medals respectively.

Expedition Crates cost Medals depending on the Rarity of the Crate. You can tell the Rarity of a Crate by the number of Gold Knots on the Rope of the Crate.

  • Common Crates (No Gold Knot) cost 1 Medal
  • Uncommon Crates (One Gold Knot) cost 2 Medals
  • Rare Crates (Two Gold Knots) cost 4 Medals
  • Very Rare Crates (Three Gold Knots) cost 6 Medals

Differences from Single Player[]

In RIVALS mode:

  • You start in an Outpost instead of your ship.
    • Water is no longer offered for free.
  • You cannot return to London, but can trade at outposts instead.
    • You cannot upgrade your animals' carrying capacity.
    • You cannot recruit companions except from villages and cultist-led missions, or through events.
    • Harbor quests are not available.
  • Your Standing will gradually rise over time.
    • Instead of giving you a one-time bonus, the Good Reputation perk increases the speed at which this occurs.
    • But be careful, as a low Standing will make all the natives on the map hostile to you.
  • A new enemy may be encountered in prehistoric biomes: the t-rex.
    • Snarfrattle is not a unique enemy and multiple copies of him can be found wandering the map.
  • Three new companions are available: the native hunter, scientific assistant, and yakul.
  • New items are available: the T-Rex Tooth, tome page of chasm, Treasure Hunter Badge, Trophy Hunter Badge.
  • Badge servants can be found in outposts or wandering the map.
  • You start with a generic explorer with a customizable appearance.
    • Your explorer is promoted through exploration points instead of completing expeditions.
    • You have 730 days until your expedition ends. After half this time passes, your explorer will get a progressively worse Mental Exhaustion ailment, limiting your trek's mobility, while your companions will get the Faithless ailment, which will erode their Loyalty and, sooner or later, make them desert. Both of these ailments are incurable.
  • Funds do not exist. Trading is done exclusively through bartering with traders.
  • Items that have a Fame value can be dropped off at outposts or missions (as long as the missionary is still running it). This will immediately increase your Fame score.
  • Treasure items can be salvaged for jewels.
  • Treasure maps have a Value of zero.
  • Tome pages of Homebound will return you to the closest outpost. Tome pages of Targetted (sic) Teleportation have a maximum range.
  • Instead of their normal function, cenotes will reveal a random region on the map.
  • Camp sites cannot be moved after they have been set up. To help balance this, they are cheaper and available in greater numbers.
