A Portal is a special location that yields two options when explored: leaving it alone does nothing, but stepping through it transports the group temporarily to a Portal World.
Only one portal can spawn on any given map, and most have none. The presence of a portal is indicated on the World Map when selecting a destination.
Each portal world allows 20-30 days before transporting the group back to the originating portal. A player can choose to leave a portal world early by simply interacting with the Portal entrance again.
Time continues to pass in the race to the pyramid while a party is detoured in a portal world. Leaving the Portal World returns the expedition to the site of the Portal and removes it from the exploration map.
