The Necronomicon is a rare, reusable item that can provide powerful benefits in exchange for immense sanity loss. It can be rarely and randomly found in caves and shrines or found using a treasure map. It can be traded, but is arguably more valuable if kept and used by the player.
For most explorers, each use of the book costs 70 Sanity.
For H. P. Lovecraft, Huang Feihong, Grigori Rasputin, Mary Kingsley and possibly others (Charles Darwin?), the cost of each use is only 35 Sanity.
Possible results from using the book:
- nothing happens (~75% chance)
- generates 1-3 tome pages (~15% chance)
- generates a portal 2 hexes from the current position (<10% chance)
- bursts into flame, destroying itself and setting fire to adjacent hexes (100% chance if the player's sanity will drop below 20 upon using it)
Lovecraft[]
H. P. Lovecraft always starts out with the Necronomicon. He also has the Cosmic Indifferentism perk, which gives him custom benefits when using Necronomicon. His possible results are:
- nothing happens (~30% chance)
- generates 1-3 tome pages (~60% chance)
- generates a portal 2 hexes from the current position (<10% chance)
- bursts into flame, destroying itself and setting fire to adjacent hexes (100% chance if the player's sanity will drop below 0 upon using it)
It only costs Lovecraft 35 Sanity per use of the book.
Lovecraft is unlocked by using a Necronomicon for the first time, meaning the player must find one organically before taking advantage of these stats.
Tips[]
- The book can be exploited for infinite uses through reusable sanity-regenerating options such as camp sites, drums, resting on the ship, or other camp spots in the open like waterfalls, overhangs and springs.
- The Strong Mind perk allows the player more wiggle-room for how often they must regenerate sanity between uses of the Necronomicon.
- Infinite tomes can be collected from the Necronomicon, as they are weightless and don't count towards the player's carry capacity. These scrolls can help overcome many map obstacles, and even aid in the discovery of special treasures like the Blood Crown.
Trivia[]
